Microsoft Surface – NOT £1000/$1000

Remember last week when we reported that Swedish website Webhallen had put up prices for the Microsoft Surface, and that it was going to cost around £1000/$1000? Well it turns out that this was incorrect.

In a statement released by the Swedish website Webhallen have stated that the pricing is just a placeholder and that they have not had any confirmed prices from Microsoft.

“Our customers are very interested in pre-ordering these products, so we have set a high preliminary pricing for the lineup so that they may be able to pre-order them.

Just to clarify, we have not received any pricing from Microsoft regarding MRSP or purchasing net cost, and any people who have booked the Surface at this high price will of course have their order adjusted before any product is shipped. So we’re not going to overcharge anyone for being an early adopter. “

If Microsoft want to compete in the tablet market, and with such a potentially great device they clearly want to, the issue is going to be pricing. If the Surface is not at least comparable with the iPad in pricing then Microsoft will lose their bid in the tablet war before it has even begun, especially given that Google’s Nexus 7 has now been released at an incredibly competitive £199/$199.

Microsoft have not released a statement on the incident, however as they previously announced that Surface would only be available through Microsoft Stores and it’s website, it’s probably that Webhallen are looking to purchase Surface tablets in bulk and then perhaps sell them for more.
